SPACE: A Journey to Our Future - Exhibit Highlights

“SPACE: A JOURNEY TO OUR FUTURE” is created to ignite the desire for space exploration and discovery among student and families, sparking imaginations and inspiring new generations of explorers to dream of the possibilities that lie ahead.

The exhibit, which is touring major science centers and air and space museums around the country over more than four years, gives audiences an opportunity to experience past explorations and look to the future of space travel.

“SPACE” reintroduces audiences to generations of dreamers and thinkers, demonstrating how they have at times risked their lives to give the world a better understanding of who we are and how we fit into the universe around us. Most importantly, visitors will meet today’s explorers, and learn how these people are working to understand more about the planet, how to protect it, and how to increase our understanding of the beginning of the universe and what life exists beyond Earth.

“SPACE” uses immersive scenic elements, the most advanced interactive exhibits and state-of-the-art projection and audio technology to bring this epic story to life.

This wide range of exhibits allows visitors to experience space exploration and discovery firsthand:

INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES
(Note that interactives vary by venue.)

Touch a lunar sample

See artifacts such as a flown lunar scoop and camera from the Apollo program

Columbia Shuttle tiles

Listen to a radio to hear “War of the Worlds”

Step onto the “Moon Scale” and establish your weight on the Moon

View cultural artifacts surrounding space--books, toys, etc.

Switch through information coming from dozens of satellites A touch-screen computer interactive lets you look at the same star field through five different telescope set-ups

Get updated information of various probes hurtling through the Solar

System

Determine the correct amount of fuel needed to get to Mars

Step in front of an Infrared camera and see your body’s temperatures by color on the screen

Touch a meteoritic sample from Mars

Mars Rover model

Discover Space area lets kids experience space with try-on spacesuit, computer interactives, soft play toys, a space library, other media

Explore a future Lunar Base Camp while walking through a full-size space living habitat and work pod

Take a spin on a centrifuge that visitors power like a bicycle

Get a first-hand look at a wide range of artifacts from the space program

Use a range of interactives to plan, design--even pack for--your own trip to Mars

Get an up-close view of the Orion--the spacecraft that will take a new generation of human explorers back to the moon, and then onward to Mars and other destinations in the solar system; also, see a model of the Ares rocket that will propel the new spacecraft

Look far into the future of our exploration of the universe in a 360-degree theater

SPACE: A Journey to Our Future - Exhibit Collaborators

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA)

Since its inception in 1958, NASA has accomplished many scientific and technological feats in air and space. NASA technology has also been adapted for many non-aerospace uses by the private sector. NASA remains a leading force in scientific research and in stimulating public interest in aerospace exploration, as well as science and technology in general. Perhaps more importantly, our exploration of space has taught us to view the Earth, ourselves, and the universe in a new way. While the tremendous technical and scientific accomplishments of NASA demonstrate vividly that humans can achieve previously inconceivable feats, we also are humbled by the realization that Earth is just a tiny "blue marble" in the cosmos. www.nasa.gov.

GENERAL MOTORS

Founded in 1908, General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM), today employs about 266,000 people around the world -- more than any other automaker. With global headquarters in Detroit, GM manufactures its cars and trucks in 34 countries -- also more than any other automaker. In 2007, 9.4 million GM cars and trucks were sold globally under the following brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, HUMMER, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn and Vauxhall. GM’s OnStar subsidiary is the industry leader in vehicle safety, security and information services. For more information on GM’s global reach and what it is doing to meet the changing transportation needs of each region of the world, go to www.gm.com.

LOCKHEED MARTIN CORPORATION

About NASA

What Does NASA Do?

NASA's mission is to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research.

To do that, thousands of people have been working around the world -- and off of it -- for almost 50 years, trying to answer some basic questions. What's out there in space? How do we get there? What will we find? What can we learn there, or learn just by trying to get there, that will make life better here on Earth?

A Little History

President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1958, partially in response to the Soviet Union's launch of the first artificial satellite the previous year. NASA grew out of the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA), which had been researching flight technology for more than 40 years.

President John F. Kennedy focused NASA and the nation on sending astronauts to the moon by the end of the 1960s. Through the Mercury and Gemini projects, NASA developed the technology and skills it needed for the journey. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first of 12 men to walk on the moon, meeting Kennedy's challenge.

Meanwhile, NASA was continuing the aeronautics research pioneered by NACA. It also conducted purely scientific research and worked on developing applications for space technology, combining both pursuits in developing the first weather and communications satellites.

After Apollo, NASA focused on creating a reusable ship to provide regular access to space: the space shuttle. First launched in 1981, the space shuttle has had 120 successful flights. In 2000, the United States and Russia established permanent human presence in space aboard the International Space Station, a multinational project representing the work of 16 nations.

NASA also has continued its scientific research. In 1997, Mars Pathfinder became the first in a fleet of spacecraft that will explore Mars in the next decade, as we try to determine if life ever existed there. The Terra and Aqua satellites are flagships of a different fleet, this one in Earth orbit, designed to help us understand how our home world isi changing. NASA's aeronautics teams are focused on improved aircraft travel that is safer and cleaner.

Throughout its history, NASA has conducted or funded research that has led to numerous improvements to life here on Earth.

Organization

NASA Headquarters, in Washington, provides overall guidance and direction to the agency, under the leadership of Administrator Michael Griffin. Ten field centers and a variety of installations conduct the day-to-day work, in laboratories, on air fields, in wind tunnels and in control rooms.

NASA Today

NASA conducts its work in four principle organizations, called mission directorates:

Aeronautics: pioneers and proves new flight technologies that improve our ability to explore and which have practical applications on Earth.

Exploration Systems: creates new capabilities and spacecraft for affordable, sustainable human and robotic exploration

Science: explores the Earth, moon, Mars and beyond; charts the best route of discovery; and reaps the benefits of Earth and space exploration for society.

Space Operations: provides critical enabling technologies for much of the rest of NASA through the space shuttle, the International Space Station and flight support.

In the early 21st century, NASA's reach spans the universe. Spirit and Opportunity, the Mars Exploration Rovers, are still studying Mars after more than three years. Cassini is in orbit around Saturn. The Hubble Space Telescope continues to explore the deepest reaches of the cosmos.

Closer to home, the latest crew of the International Space Station is extending the permanent human presence in space. Earth Science satellites are sending back unprecedented data on Earth's oceans, climate and other features. NASA's aeronautics team is working with other government organizations, universities, and industry to fundamentally improve the air transportation experience and retain our nation's leadership in global aviation.

The Future

In the next 20 years, NASA will be laying the groundwork for sending humans not only beyond Earth's orbit, but further into to space than they've ever been. The next key steps are:

Complete the International Space Station and retire the Space Shuttle by 2010

Begin robotic missions to the moon by 2008 and return people there by 2020

Continue robotic exploration of Mars and the Solar System

Develop a crew exploration vehicle and other technologies required to send people beyond low Earth orbit.

Though nearly 50 years old, NASA is only beginning the most exciting part of its existence.

Reliquary holding fragment of bones of Saint Peter, Michelangelo personal items, Bernini’s sculpture, Papal election objects, earliest known representation of Jesus featured in collection.

SAINT PETERSBURG, Fla. (November 7, 2007) – One of the largest collections of art, documents and historically significant objects from the Vatican ever to tour North America is coming to Florida International Museum beginning February 9, 2008. “Vatican Splendors from Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Swiss Guard” will present unique objects illustrating the Vatican’s impact on history and culture through 2,000 years. The timing of the exhibition commemorates the 500th anniversary of Saint Peter’s Basilica, the founding of the Vatican Museums, Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling and the establishment of the Papal Swiss Guard.

“Only three U.S. cities will host ‘Vatican Splendors,’ which commemorates the 500th anniversary of so many of the institutions we recognize within the Vatican today, said Kathy Oathout, executive director for Florida International Museum. “We are delighted that St. Petersburg will be the first stop for this special presentation.”

Approximately 200 rare objects will be presented in contextual environments, such as the recreated tomb of Saint Peter. Items in the collection—which includes tiaras; mosaics; paintings; works by well-known sculptors; papal rings and jewels; intricately embroidered silk vestments; precious objects from the Papal Mass; armor, swords and vestments of the Papal Swiss Guard; and gifts to the popes from notables such as Napoleon and the Dalai Lama—are on loan from the Vatican Museums, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the Office of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff, the Reverenda Fabbrica of Saint Peter, the Apostolic Floreria, private collections and the Papal Swiss Guard.

The exhibition also will feature actual objects relating to the election of Pope Benedict XVI, such as election ballots, patens and urns used in voting, a ceremonial vestment and an actual white smoke cartridge announcing the election.

“Indeed, this exhibition is in itself significant, as it represents the one of the largest collections of art and objects from the Vatican to tour North America,” states Monsignor Roberto Zagnoli. “Many of these works have never before been outside Vatican City."

The exhibit coincides with the 40th Anniversary of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, one of the co-sponsors of the exhibition. “We are proud to be a part of this truly historic event,” said Most Reverend Robert N. Lynch, Bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. “We encourage all residents to see the papal objects and learn the history of church from a cultural viewpoint.”

Highlights of the exhibition include a reliquary containing fragments of bones of Saint Peter and a gold Votive Plaque found in the area of the tomb, all displayed within a dramatic reproduction of the Tomb of St. Peter; the Mandylion of Edessa, a third to fifth century image on linen considered one of the oldest known representations of Jesus present in Rome; a mosaic Bust of an Angel by the 14th century master, Giotto; personal items and tools of Michelangelo; an exquisite terra-cotta sculpture by Bernini; the Papal Tiara of Pope Pius VII, the symbol of the papacy, made of gold, precious stones, pearls, velvet and silk, and topped with an exquisite emerald; a Buddhist Thanka of embroidered cloth and pearls, given by the Dalai Lama to John Paul II; the Pastoral Staff of Pope John Paul II; and a special presentation of uniforms, armor and weapons from the legendary Papal Swiss Guard.

“This exhibition is about art, history, culture and the Church’s legacy over the last 2,000 years,” said Mark Greenberg, president, Evergreen Exhibitions. “The Vatican has had a profound impact on culture through the centuries by commissioning, collecting and preserving historical objects and art. ‘Vatican Splendors’ is a moving tribute to an exquisite assemblage of art and objects associated with the papacy and the historic institution of the Vatican.”

Greenberg added that the exhibition is not solely about religion, but rather a collection of fine and decorative arts that explores the Vatican’s influence on world history.
Vatican Splendors - Exhibition Gallery Layout And Artistic Highlights

Vatican Splendors from Saint Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Swiss Guard
Exhibition Gallery Layout and Artistic Highlights

Vatican Splendors from Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Swiss Guard features approximately 200 works of art and historically significant objects, many of which have never left the Vatican.

The exhibition is organized into four thematic sections that illustrate the evolution of the Church and its papacy beginning with Saint Peter through the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI, with special emphasis on the founding 500 years ago of the Renaissance (current) Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Papal Swiss Guard and the Vatican Museums. The objects are presented in galleries and recreated environments that enhance the visitor's understanding of their historical and artistic significance.

Exhibition designers want visitors to feel transported to the Vatican, from the underground catacombs where the remains of Saint Peter were discovered to the magnificent papal chambers found above ground. From the sights and sounds of the grand Basilica to a touchable cast of John Paul II’s hand, the exhibition is a multi-sensory experience.

Gallery 1 - Foundations of the Church

Following an introductory video, this area tells the story of Peter and the building of the Church.

Jesus, the Holy Family and the Apostles
In this section, visitors will see images of the iconic founders of the Church, including the earliest representation of the face of Jesus in Rome, the Mandylion of Edessa. The venerated image is among the most ancient representations of Christ's face and was thought to have had miraculous powers.

The Tomb of Saint Peter
The section opens with a recreation of the second century Vatican necropolis. Here is found a reliquary containing bones of Saint Peter. Ancient oil lamps are displayed near a reproduction of the monument marking Saint Peter’s tomb. The apostle's gravesite later would become the site of Saint Peter's Basilica.

The Ancient Basilica
Architectural drawings, paintings, and castings tell the story of the original Saint Peter's Basilica built by the Roman emperor, Constantine. Featured is Bust of An Angel, a colorful mosaic attributed to the great 14th century painter, Giotto.

Gallery 2 - 500 Years of the Vatican

This gallery explores the Renaissance (current) Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Papal Swiss Guard, and the Vatican Museums, each marking its 500-year anniversary.

The Renaissance Basilica: The 500th Anniversary
The first stone of today’s great Saint Peter’s Basilica was laid on April 18, 1506. Some of the most storied names in history – Bramante, Bernini, Raphael, Michelangelo – contributed to the new Saint Peter's.
An exquisite terracotta bust by Bernini is the main focus in this gallery. This section also includes several drawings of the Renaissance Basilica and signed documents by some of its many architects and Michelangelo’s drafting compass.

The Papal Swiss Guard: The 500th Anniversary
The Papal Swiss Guard has fascinated the public for centuries. Here the story of this legendary guard is presented, from its history to its present day purpose. Objects presented range from their colorful uniforms to armor and weapons that have been used for function and ceremony.

The Vatican Museums: The 500th Anniversary
The Vatican Museums are one of the most famous and renowned cultural institutions of the Holy See. They are known everywhere because of the masterpieces which the Roman Pontiffs have commissioned, collected and preserved during the ages. Visitors will have an opportunity to view extraordinary works by some of the world’s greatest masters and objects from ancient foreign civilizations.

Gallery 3 - The Work of the Pope

Here, visitors learn about the election of the pope, liturgical celebrations, and dialogue with the world. Also featured is the significance of the Sistine Chapel in history and in present-day importance.

The Sistine Chapel
This section examines the ceremony surrounding the death of a pope, and the process of papal succession—which takes place within the Chapel's chambers.

Election
The timely subject of Election is explored, from the rites, traditions and ceremonies that mark the passing of a pontiff to the process and ceremony for selecting and installing a new pope. The election of Benedict XVI is spotlighted, and actual objects from the ceremonies—presented in context—include a silver and gilt bronze urn and gilt bronze paten used for voting, a voting ballot, a white smoke cartridge used for announcing the election, and the first papal vestments created for the new pope.

Celebrations
Objects in this area demonstrate the importance and solemnity of the ceremonies performed in the Catholic Church. Artifacts include the original miter of Pope Paul VI and the papal tiara of Pope Pius XI. Liturgical objects on display in this gallery include a chasuble of Pope Pius XI, a missal of Pope Leo XIII, and Leo XIII’s table cross of gold, diamonds, pearls and sapphires.

Dialogue with The World
This section describes the pope's work within the Roman Catholic Church, his involvement with the missions and his dialogue with other religions and with the world. Featured art includes rare historical documents, such as a 19th century illustration of a funeral in Vietnam and a Tibetan Buddhist hanging scroll, or Thanka, given to Pope John Paul II by the Dalai Lama in 1978.

Gallery 4 - Stories of Popes

The Church considers Saint Peter the first pope. With the election of Benedict XVI in 2005, 265 men have served as pope in the 20 centuries since Peter’s ministry. This gallery presents stories and objects of the some of the most important and interesting of them. The Tiara of Pope Pius VII, containing one of the world’s largest emeralds, and a bronze sculpture of Paul VI (1963-1978) by Lello Scorzelli highlight the gallery.

The gallery gives special emphasis to Pope John Paul II and today’s pope, Benedict XVI. John Paul II's pastoral staff and cope worn for the Jubilee year celebration are included in this section, along with a special bronze cast of John Paul II’s hand, created just prior to his passing, which allows visitors to actually touch the form of this much celebrated figure.

A portrait of Benedict XVI, and the pope’s chasuble, miter, and “Fisherman’s Ring” bid farewell to visitors as they re-enter the world with a new view of the role of the Church and Papacy in the world.

Many of the works and documents exhibited in Vatican Splendors from Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Swiss Guard have never been on public display or previously left the Vatican. Therefore, this exhibition has provided an occasion for undertaking a careful restoration and conservation process that will preserve these objects for future generations.

The following institutions have lent the objects for this exhibition, one of the largest collections from the Vatican ever to tour North America:
.

The Office of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff - the duty of the Office is to prepare all that is necessary for liturgical celebrations or any other sacred celebrations either presided by the pope, or at which he participates or assists, or which are presided in his name by a Cardinal or Prelate. One most important task of the Office is the planning, publication and distribution of special prayer-booklets for each liturgy, an asset that guarantees worthy and active participation of those present.

The Vatican Museums - The Vatican Museums are one of the most famous and renowned cultural institutions of the Holy See. They are known everywhere because of the masterpieces which the Roman Pontiffs have commissioned, collected and preserved during the ages. Together with the immense heritage of movable works of art, sculptures and paintings, which are displayed in the galleries, the precincts of the Vatican Museums include the most important and artistically significant rooms of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, such as the “Cappella Niccolina” with paintings by Beato Angelico, the “Appartamento Borgia” with decorations by Pinturicchio, the “Stanze” painted by Raphael and, of course, the Sistine Chapel with frescoes by Michelangelo, as well as the most important 15th century masters from Umbria and Tuscany.

Exhibition to showcase Leonardo da Vinci inventions in largest ever North American tour

SAN ANTONIO-(BUSINESS WIRE)-An unprecedented traveling exhibition of the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci will tour North America beginning in 2008.

"Leonardo da Vinci's Machines in Motion," created by Worldwide Museum Activities (WMA) and organized by Evergreen Exhibitions, will bring from Florence, Italy the largest exhibition of full-size machine replicas, constructed according to Leonardo da Vinci’s famous codices. The exhibit will appear in science centers and natural history museums in major cities. Evergreen has begun solicitation for national sponsors of the tour.

With a large footprint that can be condensed to 5,000 square feet, "Machines in Motion" uniquely presents 40 functional actual-size working artifacts-as opposed to miniatures or static displays-built by a team of renowned historians and engineers who have studied Leonardo da Vinci’s codices.

Visitors can manipulate and fully activate the machines, which were designed based on the materials-rope, wood, glue, etc.-proposed by Leonardo da Vinci and the tools available at the time each was designed.

The exhibit is organized into four parts, based on Leonardo da Vinci's study of the elements of nature and applied knowledge: earth, air, fire and water. Highlights include a revolving crane, a full-size armored car (large enough for several visitors to explore inside), a working robot, four flying machines, the bicycle, the printing press, floats for walking on water, the parachute and the machine gun.

The exhibition is of particular interest to students and young audiences, because it provides an engaging combination of education and entertainment in an experience that explores history, science, mechanics and physics, invention and innovation. The exhibit has appeared in Athens and Istanbul to broad audiences, positive critical reviews and substantial media coverage.

Evergreen Exhibitions (formerly Clear Channel Exhibitions), founded in 1992, is one of the world's premier providers of traveling museum exhibits. Evergreen conceptualizes, designs, produces, markets and tours its exhibits, primarily in science, natural history and children's museums. More than 80 million people worldwide have attended the company’s exhibitions. More company information is available at www.evergreenexhibitions.com.
Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion

Leonardo da Vinci is celebrated as a painter, sculptor, musician, architect, engineer and anatomist. Most enduring to his legacy are his inventions and designs. Machines in Motion presents 40 full-scale machines that were built after in-depth study of Leonardo da Vinci’s designs by a group of scientists and skilled craftsmen in Florence, Italy. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that many of the mechanisms are life-sized and fully operational. Visitors may touch and set them in motion, combining a fascinating hands-on experience with an exploration of the principles he employed to create each machine. The machines are grouped into four sections based upon applications linked to the elements--air, water, land and fire--which held a strong fascination for Leonardo da Vinci. Exhibits include such visionary inventions as the helicopter and glider, the armored tank, the drive transmission, the printing press and the bicycle. Most of the materials used in the construction of these machines...
